Easy ways to increase your motivation and unlock your fitness potential
Starting a new fitness routine can be daunting, but with the right exercise, the right fuel and some clear goals, you’ll be well on the road to success.
Starting a new fitness regime can be a daunting process, and it’s sometimes all too easy to lose motivation and fall at the first hurdle. To help increase your chances of success, we asked a personal trainer in London to give us his top tips for kick-starting your fitness journey.
Set clear goals
When it comes to starting, and sticking to, a new fitness regime, a lack of motivation is often the main barrier to success. To avoid this, it’s important to set yourself some clear goals from the outset so that you know what you want to achieve and are motivated to keep going when you’re tempted to give up. Your goals should be personal to you. Maybe you want to lose three inches off your waist, perhaps you want to run a marathon, or maybe you want to increase the number of reps you can do when lifting weights. Whatever they are, make sure your goals are realistic whilst still challenging you to push yourself that little bit further
Choose the right regime
Choosing the right exercise is also key to succeeding in your fitness journey. First things first, it’s important to pick something that you at least partly enjoy; after all, if you really detest running, a workout regime that is centred around running is probably doomed to failure. The most successful fitness routines are those that contain plenty of variety. A training plan that combines cardio and strength training with low-impact stretching exercises such as Pilates will help to keep you engaged and motivated while optimising your fitness.
Find an exercise buddy
Exercising is always more fun with a friend, so try to convince one of your mates to become your fitness buddy. Having a training partner will make your workout sessions more fun and it is proven to increase motivation and performance levels. If you’re struggling to find a willing victim, why not think about joining a running club, gym class or sports team? As well as helping you to get fit, it’s also a great opportunity to make new friends who share a common interest.
In order to really optimise your fitness, it’s essential to eat well and put the right food into your body. Without the right fuel, you will suffer from fatigue and struggle to reach your full fitness potential. Avoid fad diets or strict, calorie-controlled regimes, and instead concentrate on following a well-balanced, healthy diet that’s full of fresh fruit and vegetables, wholegrains, complex carbohydrates, and plenty of healthy protein for muscle recovery – your body will thank you for it.
Hire a professional
If you’re struggling to get started on your fitness journey, you may want to consider using a personal trainer. As well as enabling you to exercise at a time and place that’s convenient to you, they can also help you to create a personalised training plan that is specifically tailored to your fitness goals What’s more, they can tweak and adjust your routine as you progress, helping to ensure that you continue to push yourself and reach your full potential.
Getting fit doesn’t have to be difficult or scary. With some clear goals, the right food, the right exercise, and some support from a good friend, you’ll soon be on the road to success.
